Natural Fiber Studio

The Natural Fiber Studio produces sophisticated one-of-a-kind hand-sewn jackets, linen shirts, botanical eco-printed silk scarves, accessories, and more.

“We use natural fiber fabrics exclusively, including wool, silk, rayon, linen, cotton and hemp blends. Inspiration for our designs often comes from vintage and antique textiles from cultures around the world. We often embellish pieces with hand stitching, dyeing, piecing and quilting. Every item is made one at a time, with care and attention to detail.”

— Artist’s Statement from the Natural Fiber Studio

One-of-a-kind sustainable designs for you and your home.

Clothing design and sewing have flourished at the Folk Art Guild for over fifty years. We enjoy working in a well lit, open studio space shared with the weaving department. With high ceilings, windows on 3 sides and loft space, the studio has been a pleasant place to work together since the late 1970s. Many craftspeople have worked in the studio over the years, and the traditions and skills needed to make natural fiber items have been passed down and are still honored today. The sewing department at the Guild is led by Linda Metzger and Claudia Welbourne.

Sustainability

As we have become more aware of the environmental impact of the textile industry, we have incorporated strategies to increase the sustainability of our craft. We limit our purchases of new fabrics and utilize what we have accumulated in the studio by using off-cuts and treasured bits of old fabric, thrifted or vintage garments & fabrics. An important consideration in our work is designing pieces with less waste in mind.

Workshops

We periodically offer workshops in a variety of natural fiber skills. Check the event calendar or e-mail info@folkartguild.org to enquire about upcoming classes.
