A Free Outdoor Performance for All Ages

Join us at the Rochester Folk Art Guild for a lively, family-friendly performance of Shakespeare’s The Tempest by Shake on the Lake! This fast-paced, interactive production brings the classic story to life with puppetry, live music, and plenty of surprises.

On a mysterious island filled with magical beings and shipwrecked travelers, the exiled sorcerer Prospero conjures a mighty storm to bring his enemies to shore. Will he seek revenge or choose forgiveness?

This performance is part of our Lecture on the Lawn series and is made possible by the Rochester Area Community Foundation and the Yates County Tourism Advisory Committee.

This free outdoor performance will take place rain or shine (will be moved indoors in case of rain). Guests are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket for seating. Donations are appreciated to help support future events.

Q: Do I need to register for the event?
A: Registration is free, but we encourage it to help us prepare for the crowd. You can register online in advance.

Q: What should I bring?
A: Bring your own chair or blanket for seating. This is an outdoor event, so please plan accordingly!

Q: Is the event still happening if it rains?
A: Yes! The show will go on rain or shine. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ll move the performance indoors.

About Josh Rice

Josh Rice is a multidisciplinary theater artist, specializing in puppetry and improvisation. As the co-founder and Producing Artistic Director of Shake on the Lake, he creates engaging, family-friendly productions that bring Shakespeare and other works to life with a mix of physical performance, puppetry, and live music. Josh is also the founder of the New York State Puppet Festival, a biennial event showcasing national and international puppetry artists.

In addition to his work as a director and performer, Josh is a full-time lecturer at the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University, where he teaches applied improv to STEM professionals. His diverse background and innovative approach to theater have earned him multiple grants, including support from the Jim Henson Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York State Council on the Arts.

Josh’s work is known for its playful yet impactful combination of humor, spectacle, and audience interaction, influenced by his lifelong love of wrestling, comedy, and improvisation.
